We'd all love an iPhone, but with the current economic climate perhaps that's out of the question for now. A cheaper solution may be to install Winterface on your Pockect PC.

Winterface is designed to alter the Windows Mobile interface so it resembles that of Apple's famous device. It replaces the default WM home screen and task manager with a swanky new skin, adding a series of icons aboard a black background. You can simply click on one of these touch-friendly buttons to start an app, access a file, or alter settings.

When you first launch Winterface (in fact, every time you launch Winterface) you're given a tutorial on how to use finger gestures to start or close the application. It's designed so you just need to move your finger in a certain direction in order to perform particular commands. In theory this is a great idea, but in reality the function is rather clumsy and you'll usually find yourself just grabbing icons or launching apps by accident.

Perhaps the best thing about Winterface is its use of icons. The app arranges a series of cool icons on screen, representing programs and commands. These are highly customizable - you can choose which icons you want to appear using the Settings menu, and organize them by holding a button down and dragging it to your desired position. This particular function is pretty cute because when you have an icon selected all of the other icons start to shake about.

Another handy feature in Winterface is the ability to add shortcut icons for your contacts. This means that you simply need to tap that person's icon in order to call them, email them, or send an SMS. There's also a downloadable Weather plug-in, giving you an at-a-glance reading of the temperature in your city.

Ultimately, Winterface is just a shell for Windows Mobile, and it doesn't integrate very deeply into the OS. For example, try to enter another application, or the File Explorer and you'll be cruelly reminded that you're not using an iPhone after all.

If you want a glimpse of what it's like to use an iPhone, Winterface is worth a try. However, it's lack of real substance means you might not want to shell out for the full version.
